Uni GoldX Credit Card Review: Can Everyday Spending Really Earn 24K Digital Gold?

Most credit cards reward spending through cashback, airline miles or points that must later be converted into vouchers.

The Uni GoldX Credit Card uses a different approach.

Instead of positioning reward points as the final benefit, the card allows eligible Uni Coins earned through spending to be converted into 24-karat digital gold within the Uni app. It also combines this gold-linked rewards model with UPI payments, selected merchant offers, flight-booking rewards and zero foreign-exchange markup.

The card is offered through partnerships with YES BANK and BOBCARD, part of Bank of Baroda. Official product pages describe it as a co-branded card with 1% value back on eligible transactions, lifetime-free pricing and zero forex markup.

That gives the card an unusual identity in the Indian credit-card market.

However, the important question is not simply whether earning digital gold sounds attractive. Users must understand how the reward conversion works, which transactions are excluded, whether the gold price can fall, and whether the card is genuinely better than a straightforward cashback product.

What Is the Uni GoldX Credit Card?

The Uni GoldX Credit Card is a co-branded credit card managed through the Uni app and issued through partner banks including YES BANK and BOBCARD.

Its main features include:

  • 1% value back on eligible card spending;

  • 1% value back on eligible UPI merchant payments;

  • conversion of Uni Coins into 24K digital gold;

  • higher rewards through selected Uni Store purchases;

  • promotional flight-booking rewards;

  • zero forex markup;

  • no joining or annual fee on eligible lifetime-free variants; and

  • fuel surcharge benefits on applicable issuer variants.

The exact card network and benefit structure may differ depending on the issuing partner and product version.

YES BANK’s official page, for example, describes its Uni card as offering unlimited 1% rewards through Uni Coins, zero joining fees, zero forex markup and a fuel-surcharge waiver. Its page also notes that exclusions apply to several transaction categories.

BOBCARD describes its GoldX version as a lifetime-free card providing 1% value back on eligible transactions, 5% value back on selected Uni Store vouchers and zero forex markup.

Applicants should therefore check which bank is issuing their card before relying on a particular fee, waiver or benefit.

How the Digital Gold Reward System Works

The card does not normally purchase gold after every transaction automatically.

Users first earn rewards in the form of Uni Coins.

The Uni app currently explains the conversion as:

100 Uni Coins = ₹1 of reward value.

Users can then convert those Uni Coins into 24K digital gold inside the app. The amount of gold received depends on the gold price at the time of conversion.

For example, an eligible purchase of ₹10,000 at a 1% reward rate would generate reward value of approximately ₹100.

That ₹100 could then be converted into digital gold at the price available when the user completes the conversion.

The user would not receive a fixed number of milligrams permanently attached to the original transaction. The quantity depends on the prevailing gold price.

This distinction matters because the card is technically earning reward value that can be converted into gold, rather than directly crediting a fixed quantity of gold with every card swipe.

Is It Really 24-Karat Gold?

Uni markets the GoldX rewards as 24K digital gold and identifies Augmont as the gold-service provider on its product page.

Digital gold generally represents a claim over physical gold held by a service provider or custodian on the customer’s behalf.

Users may typically be able to:

  • view the gold balance in grams and rupees;

  • buy additional digital gold;

  • sell eligible gold for cash;

  • retain it inside the platform; or

  • request physical redemption where the platform’s terms permit it.

However, digital gold is not the same as holding a sovereign gold bond, gold exchange-traded fund or regulated bank deposit.

Users should check:

  • who legally owns and stores the gold;

  • the applicable custody arrangement;

  • buy and sell price differences;

  • redemption fees;

  • delivery charges;

  • minimum redemption quantities;

  • insurance terms; and

  • what happens if the platform or service provider changes.

The phrase “24K gold” describes purity. It does not remove platform, liquidity or counterparty considerations.

The Standard Reward Rate: 1% on Eligible Spending

The core reward rate is 1% value back on eligible purchases.

This can include qualifying online and offline card transactions. The Uni app also advertises unlimited 1% value back on eligible UPI scan-and-pay transactions.

A 1% base reward is easy to understand.

For every eligible ₹100 spent, the cardholder earns approximately ₹1 in Uni Coin value.

This simplicity is one of the card’s strengths. Many traditional cards use complicated point conversions where the final value of one reward point is unclear.

GoldX gives users a visible rupee-equivalent reward before it is converted into gold.

However, “every spend” should not be interpreted literally.

Several Transaction Categories Are Excluded

YES BANK’s official product information lists several categories on which rewards are not issued.

These include transactions such as:

  • fuel;

  • rent;

  • wallet loading;

  • cash withdrawals;

  • government payments;

  • utilities;

  • education;

  • EMI transactions;

  • certain advertising and marketing services; and

  • international transactions.

The Uni app similarly states that exclusions include money transfers, rent, fuel, cash withdrawals, wallet loads, international transactions, EMI, utilities and government services.

This means the card may offer zero forex markup on overseas spending while still providing no reward points on those international transactions.

That is not necessarily a poor deal. Avoiding a typical forex markup can itself be valuable.

But applicants should not assume they will receive both zero forex markup and 1% gold rewards on the same overseas purchase.

Gold Rewards on UPI Transactions

UPI compatibility is an important part of the GoldX proposition.

The card can be used for eligible merchant scan-and-pay transactions through UPI, with the Uni app advertising 1% value back on qualifying UPI payments.

This may be useful for cardholders who make many small daily purchases at:

  • grocery stores;

  • restaurants;

  • pharmacies;

  • local shops; and

  • other merchant QR codes.

However, credit cards linked to UPI generally cannot be used for every kind of transfer.

Person-to-person transfers, sending money to personal bank accounts and some restricted merchant categories may not qualify.

Users should also remember that a UPI credit-card payment remains borrowed money. The transaction forms part of the monthly card bill and must be repaid by the due date.

The ease of scanning a QR code should not lead to uncontrolled spending.

Up to 8% Back at Selected Brands

The Uni app advertises higher rewards through the Uni Store.

It currently states that users may receive:

  • 5% back through vouchers for selected brands such as Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket, Nykaa and Tata CLiQ; and

  • up to 8% back at some other participating merchants.

These higher rates usually depend on purchasing vouchers or booking through the Uni Store rather than paying the merchant directly with the card.

That creates several conditions users should examine:

  • whether the offer applies to all users;

  • whether a voucher must be purchased first;

  • whether the voucher has an expiry date;

  • whether it can be combined with other discounts;

  • whether refunds are allowed;

  • whether monthly limits apply; and

  • whether the merchant remains included.

The headline reward rate can be attractive, but it should not encourage unnecessary purchases.

Saving 5% on something you did not need is still overspending.

The Claimed 7% Reward on Flight Bookings

One of the card’s most attractive advertised benefits is unlimited 7% value back on flight bookings made through the Uni Store.

The current Uni app listing says this offer has no minimum spend and no reward cap.

For example, a qualifying flight booking worth ₹20,000 could theoretically generate Uni Coins worth ₹1,400 at a 7% rate.

That would be a strong reward compared with many entry-level lifetime-free cards.

However, users should compare the full booking cost.

Travel portals sometimes show different base fares, convenience fees, cancellation rules or promotional discounts.

Before booking only for the reward, compare:

  • the final price on Uni Store;

  • the airline’s direct website;

  • other travel platforms;

  • cancellation and rescheduling costs;

  • whether the reward is reversed after cancellation; and

  • when the Uni Coins are credited.

A 7% reward is valuable only when the underlying fare is competitive.

Movie Ticket Benefit

The source information mentions a 50% return on PVR or INOX tickets after monthly spending of ₹10,000.

This benefit was not clearly presented on the currently available official YES BANK or BOBCARD product pages reviewed for this article.

It may be:

  • an app-specific promotional campaign;

  • available only to selected users;

  • linked to a limited offer period;

  • available on a particular issuer variant; or

  • subject to changing terms.

Cardholders should verify the live offer inside the Uni app before relying on it.

Promotional credit-card offers can change quickly and should not be treated as permanent features unless they appear in the issuer’s continuing terms.

Zero Forex Markup

The GoldX card’s zero forex markup feature may be one of its strongest practical benefits.

Indian credit cards often charge a percentage over the converted transaction amount when used in a foreign currency.

Both Uni and BOBCARD promote zero forex markup on the GoldX card, while YES BANK also lists 0% forex markup as a key feature.

This may benefit users paying for:

  • overseas travel;

  • international hotels;

  • foreign shopping;

  • online software subscriptions;

  • international education services; or

  • other purchases billed in foreign currency.

However, zero forex markup does not necessarily mean that every international cost disappears.

Users may still face:

  • the card network’s exchange rate;

  • dynamic currency conversion charges imposed by merchants;

  • ATM charges;

  • cash-advance interest; or

  • merchant-side fees.

When paying abroad, users should generally choose the local foreign currency rather than allowing the merchant to convert the bill into rupees through dynamic currency conversion.

International transactions are also excluded from the normal 1% reward under the current published exclusions.

Is the Card Lifetime Free?

BOBCARD’s official GoldX page states that the card has no joining fee and no annual fee.

Uni’s own GoldX product page also advertises it as lifetime free.

The YES BANK page requires closer attention.

It shows zero joining fees but also mentions a renewal fee of ₹499 plus taxes, waived after ₹50,000 of eligible retail spending, while noting that the fee does not apply to lifetime-free cards.

This suggests that some YES BANK-issued customers may receive the card as lifetime free while others may be subject to the standard renewal structure depending on the specific offer.

Applicants should save a screenshot or email confirming lifetime-free status before accepting the card.

They should not rely only on a marketing advertisement if the final application screen or welcome letter shows different charges.

Fuel Surcharge Waiver

The YES BANK variant offers a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver for eligible transactions, with a maximum waiver of ₹500 per statement cycle. Its published terms also state that the waiver applies to fuel transactions up to ₹7,500.

BOBCARD also lists a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver among its GoldX benefits.

Fuel purchases themselves may not earn the standard 1% reward.

This means the benefit is a waiver of the fuel surcharge, not digital-gold rewards on the fuel amount.

Can Gold Rewards Appreciate Over Time?

Yes, the rupee value of digital gold can rise when the market price of gold rises.

That is why a user may see a higher current value than the original reward amount.

Suppose a cardholder converted ₹1,170 of rewards into digital gold. If gold prices later increased by approximately 30%, the balance might be displayed at around ₹1,520.

However, this increase is not guaranteed.

Gold prices can:

  • rise;

  • remain flat; or

  • decline.

The final value may also be affected by:

  • buy-sell spreads;

  • conversion timing;

  • redemption costs;

  • taxes;

  • platform fees; and

  • physical-delivery charges.

A statement such as “gold always appreciates” should therefore be avoided.

Gold has historically preserved value over long periods in many circumstances, but it can experience meaningful short- and medium-term declines.

Digital Gold Versus Cashback

The main difference is what happens after the reward is earned.

With cashback, ₹100 usually remains ₹100 unless it earns interest after being credited elsewhere.

With digital gold, ₹100 is converted into a small quantity of gold whose rupee value changes with the market.

This creates potential upside, but also price risk.

Digital gold may suit users who:

  • already want to accumulate small quantities of gold;

  • prefer an asset-linked reward;

  • are comfortable with changing values; and

  • do not need immediate cash.

Direct cashback may be better for users who:

  • want certainty;

  • prefer statement credits;

  • do not want gold exposure;

  • want immediate liquidity; or

  • do not want to manage another digital platform.

Neither system is automatically superior.

The better reward is the one that fits the user’s actual financial goals.

Is Digital Gold a Regulated Investment Product?

Consumers should understand that digital gold does not have the same structure as a bank fixed deposit or a SEBI-regulated mutual fund.

The gold is generally provided through a private platform arrangement involving a gold supplier, custodian and app.

Users should read the applicable digital-gold terms carefully.

Important questions include:

  • Is the gold allocated in the user’s name?

  • Where is it stored?

  • Is it insured?

  • Who audits the holdings?

  • What is the maximum holding period?

  • What happens after that period?

  • What are the buy and sell spreads?

  • Is physical redemption available?

  • What fees apply to coin delivery?

  • What happens if the app relationship ends?

The gold reward may be real, but the platform structure still matters.

Interest Charges Can Destroy the Reward Value

The rewards are useful only when the full credit-card bill is paid on time.

YES BANK currently lists an interest rate of 3.99% per month, equivalent to 47.88% annually, on revolving balances, cash advances and overdue amounts for its Uni card.

A person earning 1% in gold rewards but paying credit-card interest at such rates would lose far more than the reward received.

For example, earning ₹100 worth of digital gold on a ₹10,000 purchase offers little benefit if the cardholder carries that balance and pays hundreds of rupees in interest.

The card should therefore be used only for spending that can be repaid in full.

Cash Withdrawal Should Be Avoided

ATM withdrawals made using credit cards are generally treated as cash advances.

They may attract:

  • a cash-withdrawal fee;

  • immediate interest from the transaction date;

  • taxes on the fee; and

  • no reward points.

Cash withdrawals are included in the GoldX reward exclusions.

A credit card should not be treated as an emergency cash account unless the user fully understands the cost.

Who May Benefit From the Uni GoldX Card?

The card may be useful for users who:

  • want a simple 1% reward structure;

  • prefer gold-linked rewards over ordinary points;

  • regularly use merchant UPI payments;

  • book flights through the Uni Store;

  • travel internationally and value zero forex markup;

  • shop through participating Uni Store brands; and

  • qualify for a genuinely lifetime-free variant.

Its strongest combination may be for someone who uses both UPI and international transactions.

The UPI feature supports ordinary domestic spending, while zero forex markup can reduce the cost of foreign purchases.

Who May Not Find It Attractive?

The card may be less suitable for:

  • users who want direct statement cashback;

  • people uncomfortable with digital gold;

  • customers who already hold premium travel cards;

  • users who do not want to book through a specific app;

  • people whose spending is concentrated in excluded categories;

  • anyone likely to carry an unpaid balance; or

  • users who expect airport lounge benefits or premium insurance.

The card’s value also falls if the user does not actively convert Uni Coins into gold or use the Uni Store offers.

Advantages of the Uni GoldX Credit Card

The main advantages include:

  • 1% value back on eligible spending;

  • digital-gold conversion;

  • eligible UPI rewards;

  • potentially strong flight-booking rewards;

  • selected merchant offers;

  • zero forex markup;

  • lifetime-free availability;

  • a relatively simple reward calculation; and

  • no expiry claimed for accumulated reward value after conversion into gold.

Limitations and Risks

The important limitations include:

  • numerous reward exclusions;

  • possible differences between issuing banks;

  • some YES BANK variants potentially carrying a renewal fee;

  • dependence on Uni Store for higher rewards;

  • fluctuating gold prices;

  • digital-gold platform and redemption conditions;

  • no standard reward on international transactions;

  • promotional benefits that may change; and

  • high interest if the bill is not paid in full.

Practical Checklist Before Applying

Before accepting the card, confirm the following in writing:

  1. Is your specific card lifetime free?

  2. Which bank is issuing it?

  3. Is it Visa, Mastercard, RuPay or a dual-network structure?

  4. Which UPI transactions earn rewards?

  5. Which categories are excluded?

  6. Does the 7% flight offer currently apply?

  7. Is there a cap or booking condition?

  8. What fees apply to selling or redeeming gold?

  9. Who provides and stores the digital gold?

  10. What are the cash-advance and late-payment charges?

  11. Does the physical card carry any issuance fee?

  12. Can promotional rewards be changed without notice?

This avoids disappointment after approval.

Final Verdict

The Uni GoldX Credit Card is one of the more distinctive lifetime-free cards available in India because it combines ordinary credit-card spending with digital-gold rewards.

Its underlying value proposition is credible:

  • eligible spending earns Uni Coins;

  • Uni Coins can be converted into 24K digital gold;

  • UPI merchant payments may earn 1%;

  • selected Uni Store purchases can earn higher rewards;

  • qualifying flight bookings are advertised with 7% value back; and

  • international spending carries zero forex markup.

However, the card should not be viewed as a guaranteed wealth-building tool.

Digital gold can rise or fall in value. Rewards do not apply to every transaction. Higher offers may require using the Uni Store, and the precise fee structure can depend on whether the card is issued through YES BANK or BOBCARD.

For someone who already wants to accumulate small amounts of gold and regularly uses UPI, flights or international transactions, GoldX can be a useful and unusual rewards card.

For someone who prefers predictable cash credited directly to the statement, a conventional cashback card may still be simpler.

The smartest way to use GoldX is not to spend more merely to earn gold.

It is to use the card for planned purchases, pay every bill in full and allow the reward to remain an additional benefit rather than the reason for spending.
